Why Should We Care For Our Souls?

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." - Genesis 2:17

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" - Romans 5:12

There are two main reasons why people do not worry about their health. One is because they are so careless not realizing improper care of minor ailments usually lead to serious sickness. Second reason is because they are not aware they are sick. They don't feel any symptoms therefore, they are healthy. No reason to worry, they are not sick. A lot of people found their sickness incurable because diagnosis was made too late for cure. The rich man in Luke Chapter 16 thought all things was well with him. He told his soul, "Eat, drink and be merry for you have more than enough. There is no reason to worry for anything." But he was wrong. He did not take care of his soul, just like most of us today. We might be enjoying the good things of this world at the moment. But the truth remains, all men have a common problem, we need to do something about our souls. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and came short of the glory of God." and Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death."

We were all dead before God because of our transgression. We need to do something about it. But what can we do to live again in the sight of God? Is there anyone who is able to save himself from this death? Nobody. We're not just going to die we are already dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1) Basically death at this point means, separated from God. In our text, God warned Adam and Eve that once they eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would surely die. They did eat and based on our understanding about death, they did not die. They continue to exist and raised children but separated from God. This is the estate of most people today. Living dead. Separated from God. You might say what is that to me?

I survived all this years without God, without attending to any church or fellowship and not praying at all. As long as I can eat what I want to eat and I can buy things that will make me happy, I careless. I will die in time appointed anyway.. everybody dies. Everybody dies for it is appointed to man once to die, but after this the judgement (Hebrews 9:27). The bad news is that death, as we understand it to be far different from the truth. Men inscribe "RIP" on their tombstones meaning "rest in peace". Is there real peace to a man who did not take care of his soul while he was living? Here's what is written in John 5.28-29, "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."

In the preceding verses and in Revelation 20:11-15, the bible clearly explained the ultimate destination of those that will remain dead in their sins. Not dead as in "rest in peace" but dead in the agony of the hell of fire forever and ever. There is a lot more references in the holy book explaining the fate awaiting those who will not do something about their souls. Mark 9 mentions about fire that is not quenched and worms that dieth not. We don't exactly know how will it be to spend eternity in hell. But why remain dead in sin? The second part of Romans 6:23 is good news, "the gift of God is eternal life though Jesus Christ our Lord!"
